How to Craft a Braided Trim Without Losing Your Sanity
Step-by-Step Guide to Creating a Braided Trim
Creating a braided trim is an excellent way to add a personal touch to your sewing projects. Here’s a straightforward guide to help you craft a beautiful braided trim.
Step 1: Prepare Your Fabric Strips
Select your fabric, I used black, orange, teal, and purple.
Cut each strip 2” x WOF.
Fold each strip in half toward the middle, and then fold it in half again.
Press each strip flat and stitch along both edges to secure the folds.
Step 2: Arrange the Colors
Lay out your strips and decide on the color order.
Lay three of the four strips horizontally on a flat surface. Use pins to keep them in place, I used a wool mat.
Step 3: Start Weaving
Begin weaving the fourth strip under and over the three horizontal strips.
Fold each piece as you weave to maintain a clear pattern.
Use pins to secure the strips as you work to keep them from shifting. I LOVE using Clover Fork Pins for this.
Step 4: Secure with Pins
As you progress, place additional pins to hold the strips tightly in place.
Adjust the pins as necessary to keep the weave neat and even.
Step 5: Press and Secure
Periodically, use an iron to press the trim flat. This helps keep everything aligned and smooth.
You may use a small amount of fabric glue to keep any loose parts in place. I LOVE Acorn SeamAlign Gentle Hold Fabric Glue.
Step 6: Finishing the Ends
When you reach the end of the trim, stitch along the edges to secure it.
If you need to extend the trim, join additional strips by tucking new pieces under an existing strip and stitching to secure.
Step 7: Final Stitching
Complete your trim by stitching in the ditch on both sides of the horizontal strips.
Step 8: Trim Application
Your braided trim is now complete and ready to be used in your projects. It can be sewn onto garments, accessories, or home decor items as desired.
By following these steps, you can create a durable and attractive braided trim for various sewing projects. Happy crafting!
